Peter White has been engaged in two careers in his life: Professor of American Literature and European-trained violin maker. Now, in his semi-retirement, he is able to focus on the art of lutherie, having studied formally with Jan Pawlikowski in Krakow Poland in the 1980s. Since moving to San Antonio in 2022, he has been developing his relationships with Texas violin shops and continuing to refine his technical skill and the methods of varnishing violins in the older, Italian style. Peter has won multiple medals in violin making competitions, including a gold medal in the 2010 International Competition for Antiqued Instruments in Cremona Italy. He is the founder of the New Mexico Musical Heritage Program which continues to teach Hispanic and Native American student to make and play the violin. In 1990 he owned a violin shop which sponsored the Violin Society of America international Contest and Convention. He is eager to show his violins to students and professional musicians throughout Texas. He hopes to continue practicing his craft for the indefinite future here in San Antonio.
